The trial lesson for our first course in patent translation from German to Japanese was a complete success

More participants than expected

On April 19 the trial lesson for our beginner’s course for patent translation from German to Japanese took place and it was more than fully booked with 23 participants.

We had our concerns because there are not so many people with an interest in patent translation and our target group is even more limited as our course specializes in German translation.

But when talking to the participants we found that everyone wanted to apply their German skills in their profession. 12 of the participants were students of German or related subjects. We were delighted with their positive attitude.

With tea and sweets in front of them all listened spellbound to the words of the CEO of transeuro, Yuki Kato, who held the trial lesson. He first went over what a patent is and explained when translations are needed and also explained the difference to other types of translation in e.g. art and film. Finally, he talked about the structure of a patent specification using actual examples.

Many students attended, but there were also many attendees who already use German professionally. Among them was a Japanese translator who is currently working abroad and had returned to Japan especially for our course.

There are not many teachers who can teach you “German for your profession” and even fewer that can teach “German for patent translation”.

The fact that we can offer such a course is also due to the fact that transeuro is the former translation department of a law firm that is more than 100 years old and that we employ over 40 translators (80% of whom are German translators).

Even though we are blessed with highly qualified employees, we cannot rest on our laurels. We are aware of our responsibility to train new patent translators to raise the global standard for patent translation.

Although machine translation continues to evolve, it is people who form the core of the translation service. As long as there are human beings, training will be necessary. In this industry, it is undoubtedly difficult to work in a future-oriented way if you only think of profit. At transeuro, we are aware of the level of competence of our translators, which has been built up over many years through our internal teacher-pupil system. That’s why we want to take care of the training of new translators in a decent and open manner.

Our first beginner course for patent translators starts on May 10. We are curious to see who will participate. For questions and registrations please write to us at marketing@trans-euro.jp.
